The four questions that matter more than any feature list
1. Will you actually use it at the chute? Software that only gets updated back at the office becomes a transcription chore, and transcription chores get skipped. If the app isn't fast on the phone in your pocket, with cold fingers, the records won't happen. This one question eliminates more products than any other.
2. How does the pricing scale? Per-head pricing feels cheap at 40 cows and becomes a real line item at 300. Flat pricing is boring and predictable. Know which one you're signing up for and do the math at the herd size you plan to be, not the one you are.
3. Can you get your data out? Any product worth trusting lets you export everything to a file you own. If you can't find the export button during the free trial, that's your answer.
4. Who is it actually built for? Some products are built for feedlots, some for seedstock operations doing EPD and breed-association work, some for commercial cow-calf outfits. A product built for someone else's operation will fight you daily.
