Baytril 100 is a fluoroquinolone — the same drug family as human Cipro — approved for respiratory disease in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle with a 28-day slaughter withdrawal.
Fluoroquinolones carry a rule no other cattle antibiotic class does: extra-label use in food animals is federally prohibited. Not "requires a longer withdrawal" — illegal, full stop. No off-label doses, no off-label diseases, no use in classes of cattle not on the label. What the label says is the only legal way to use this bottle.
What the label requires
- Slaughter withdrawal: 28 days from the single dose.
- Extra-label use of fluoroquinolones in food animals is prohibited by federal law — there is no vet-adjusted alternative.
- That prohibition covers dose, route, frequency, disease, and class of animal.
- Same rule applies to Advocin (danofloxacin), the other cattle fluoroquinolone.

Why can’t my vet prescribe Baytril off-label like other antibiotics?
FDA banned extra-label fluoroquinolone use in food animals to slow resistance in a drug class critical to human medicine. Unlike most cattle drugs, where a vet can legally go off-label with an extended withdrawal, fluoroquinolones have no legal extra-label path at all.
How long after Baytril can cattle be slaughtered?
28 days after the injection, per the U.S. label. Because off-label use is illegal, there is no scenario where a different (vet-set) interval applies — if the use did not match the label, the animal has a residue problem and a compliance problem.
