Milk & dairy: Milk withhold 60 hours (5 milkings). Sulfa use in lactating dairy cattle is tightly restricted — sulfadimethoxine is the only sulfa legal there, on-label only.

Sulfadimethoxine — Albon boluses being the familiar form — is the standard treatment for coccidiosis and one of the older tools for foot rot and pneumonia. The label course is a loading dose followed by daily doses for no more than 5 days total, with a 7-day slaughter withdrawal from the last dose.

Sulfas as a class have a rough residue history in dairy, and regulators watch them closely: sulfadimethoxine is the only sulfonamide that may be used in lactating dairy cattle, and only exactly as labeled. No withdrawal has been established for pre-ruminating calves, so marketing bob veal after treatment is a violation.

What the label requires

  • Slaughter withdrawal: 7 days from the last dose; milk withhold 60 hours.
  • Do not treat longer than 5 consecutive days.
  • Only sulfa legal in lactating dairy cattle, and only at exact label use.
  • No withdrawal established for pre-ruminating (veal) calves.

Always follow the label on your bottle and your veterinarian's directions. Extra-label use — any different dose, route, or frequency — voids the withdrawal above; your vet sets the interval instead, usually via FARAD. When in doubt, hold longer. Label data checked July 18, 2026. Source: FDA label (DailyMed).

Never ship a treated animal by mistake

Log a treatment in HerdCommand with its withdrawal days and the animal carries a hold flag until the date clears — and the sale workflow warns you before a flagged animal ends up on a load. Works from the phone in your pocket, at the chute.

Common questions

How long is the Albon withdrawal for calves treated for coccidiosis?

7 days from the last dose for cattle. But note the label establishes no withdrawal for pre-ruminating calves — very young calves on milk cannot be sold for veal after treatment.
